What month is it best to go kayaking?

February 18, 2010 - 4:01 am 3 Comments

The best time to go on your trip is when currents are at minimum flow. During a month (or MOONth), when is/are the best time(s) to go kayaking?

it is always best to check the tide and when the river or sea etc will be at its peak points http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/ is a good website, but generally the summer is best..

make sure you take proseddures as the weather can change at any time..
-sun cream
-dry clothes
-food and drink
-watch
-money
and make sure you always tell someone where you are going when you plan to be back..

it would be better to take 1 star or your stars before you leave then you will be taught how to deal with any problems and also general water safety..

good luck and happy paddling!!

Would kayaking be a good way to cross-train for rowing?

February 18, 2010 - 4:00 am 1 Comment

I mean when you do it right, like the sprint kayak competitors. Not like taking a leisurely paddle on the river.

I am a rower but I cannot afford my own shell to practice in by myself. I know rowing works more muscles, but would kayaking work muscles that matter for rowing or is it all just arms?

Sure, while you are not working the exact same muscles your are working the large muscle groups in similar fashion.

Plus if you have the chance to get on the water and get a good workout at the same time go and do it.

Have fun

What metals were used in ancient, river valley and classical civilizations?

February 14, 2010 - 6:27 am 2 Comments

Like Paleolithic, Neolithic, Egypt, Mesopitamia, Indus River Civilizations, Maurya and Gupta in India and the Shang, Zhou, Qin and Han dynasties in China?

Ancient people (neolithic) first started working gold and copper, the two softest metals. By 3000 bc, people in Egypt, Mesopotamia and the caucus had started to add tin to copper making bronze.

River Kayak: Accident Scenarios?

February 14, 2010 - 6:26 am 1 Comment

I’m 15 years old (going on 25 some people tell me) (very responsible my parents tell me and their friends) and I’m trying to convince my dad to let me buy a kayak AND GO OUT ALONE I’ve got all the supplies and stuff (rope, radio, food water life vest etc.) but my dad wont let me because he thinks that there is too much of a risk that i might get lost or hurt……….. but I’m trying to convince him that i can handle almost any possible scenario.(i weigh 110 pounds and can bench 175 lbs.im on the swim team and can swim for 2.5 hours non-stop ive gotten lost in the Rockies for 2 days and killed 3 squirrels in 2 hours found fresh water boiled it …. found my way to safety without panicking ) i tell him its a river that is straight where can i go. right im mean what could happen. but he still wont let me. ok heres my Question. what are all the possibilities that could possibly even extremely rare accidents that you can think of plain and simple nothing immpossible so that i can tell my dad and try to convince him My mom wants me to get a kayak but my dad just hates the idea of not knowing where i am every second. WHICH IS MORE DANGEROUS??? RIDING MY BIKE 7 MILES CROSSING 18 STREETS TO GET SOMETHING TO EAT OR GOING ON A 5 HOUR KAYAKING TRIP ALONE ON A RIVER THAT HAS NO TRAFFIC DO YOU SEE MY POINT??? ( I live in Florida)

Its the alligators and crocodiles: one bite and you are no more.

If it is just "where are you": then a GPS / mobile phone that sends out a signal that can be tracked on a computer might be enough.

And a waterproof GPS, that has a "what direction to get back to the start" feature might help.

How can a river run north and south at the same time?

February 9, 2010 - 1:37 pm 2 Comments

If you have a river that runs north and south and another river branches off of it to the west then turns south,at the point where the two (3) rivers meet how can the water run north on the north of the other branching river and then south on the south side at the same time?

How can A river ( the same river) can run north & south at the same time?
That means the river is not running anywhere (neither north nor south) and it is a stagnant pool.
First principle of flowing water is it ‘runs down’, from a higher level to one that is lower. If some water runs from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ that is south of ‘A’, because A is higher than B (B is lower than A), how can some other water climb from ‘B’ to ‘A’ in an attempt to flow north.
This is all I understood from your stated (I don’t know about your ‘unstated’ meaning) version.

Is it possible to kayak from the Pee Dee river to Myrtle beach, SC?

Me and a few friends are trying to do a trip this summer and I was wondering if there is anything blocking our path, or any rapids and if so what stages are they. We planned on setting off right past the dam at Lake Tillery. Also is there any places I can get my hands on a nice map of the river.

Yes you can put in at Rockingham n.c or cheraw s.c and go all the way the the beach, I did it back in 2004 , I put in at cheraw s.c and it took 4 1/2 days to make the trip, from cheraw to the beach was 126 miles, and there are no dams after the one in Rockingham , the water was just right that week. I ‘m not saying there are no alligators, but I didn’t see any on my trip, lots of nice clean places to camp out also. as far as anything blocking your path, or any rapids, no not really, maybe a class 1 rapids in places.

Best state to go trout fishing, white water rafting, and hiking in?

February 9, 2010 - 1:36 pm 4 Comments

Out of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado, which is the best to go trout fishing, white water rafting, and hiking in? Also, if you know of specific places in these states that are good for them 3 activities please put them in your answer. Thank you.

Idaho! No contest. Raft down Hells Caynon. lots of Intersting Geology, old homesteds, wildlife ect. for hiking. Smallmouth, rainbow trout, channel cats, sturgun steelhead and salmon for fishing and some incredable rapids. I camped a week at Granite Creek and it was the expereance of my life. (my grandmother’s new husband was raised at Saddle Creek (a few mikes upstream from Granite).
(I have pics I can send you if you want them.) P.S. have an Oregon flishing licence to You never know which side of the river you’re going to camp on.

Where can I plan a white water rafting trip near St Louis?

February 8, 2010 - 9:37 am 1 Comment

I am trying to plan a white water rafting weekend trip for my fiance and I. Where is the closest place to St louis and how do I find a place to contact about booking the trip?

If you are looking for real whitewater rafting, I would head over to Colorado and raft the Arkansas River. There are great campsites and little inn’s all along the Arkansas River. I always raft with a company called American Adventure Expeditions. They have amazing guides, brand new equipment and clean facilities. We always have a blast with them.

Where to go kayaking in southern CA for beginners?

February 2, 2010 - 11:33 am 1 Comment

Me and my friends are looking to go kayaking somewhere in southern CA. We have almost no experience and we are looking to kayak at a river but we don’t know where to go.

Any recommendations would be helpful

Hi there,

There is a very useful site listed below which gives you the current trend for whitewater in rivers in all USA states. On the site, either use the link ‘River Info’ or choose the ’state’ search. There is also a map search. Level 1 and 2 are considered to be beginner level whitewater.

A map of CA should show you where the river is, or perhaps try a search for the river name under ‘maps’ (if you don’t have an Atlas)

How to work out for paddling in surfing?

February 2, 2010 - 11:32 am 5 Comments

How do I train my shoulders for the specific motion of paddling out and into waves? I know general shoulder exercises, however I can do them all winter and feel completely unprepared come spring. Without out paying for one of those machines, does anyone know advanced techniques?
Thanks

a good one is to go out on flat days and sit on your knees, keeping yourself balanced on the center of your board. then paddle with long strides going along the coast. your shoulders and triceps will kill
